The Recreation Department facilitates the development, maintenance, and expression of an appropriate, resident centered, leisure lifestyle.

Our Goals:
  • To enhance the quality of life of our residents by providing recreation programs that are balanced to meet their individual needs.
  • To maintain the maximum level of resident function by providing physical, emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual stimulation through programming.
  • To build positively on existing strengths and capabilities
  • To offer residents the opportunity to choose to attend programs of interest.
  • To encourage and help residents develop healthy social relationships and adapt to their new surroundings.

The Recreation Department is responsible for the selection, implementation, and evaluation of goal-orientated services based on individual evaluation and program referral. For each resident, a Recreation Coordinator completes an evaluation of their orientation, memory recall, attention span and ability to hear and understand instructions. A social history is also compiled and shared with the interdisciplinary team.

“Recreation’s purpose is not to kill time, but to make life; not to keep a person occupied, but to keep them refreshed; not to offer an escape from life, but to provide a discovery of life.”

Among a long list of benefits, recreation:

  • Provides an outlet for socialization
  • Reduces depression and anxiety
  • Maintains or improves cognitive function
  • Opportunity for creative expression
  • Increases happiness and motivation
  • Assists in decreasing behavioural issues

Calendars are created for each area of Oliver Lodge. Not all programs are shown on the calendar as some programs are very specific to who the programs are targeted.

  • Global Programs – available to all residents who which to attend. Ex: Musical performances
  • Small Group Programs – specific to individuals selected to take part due to Recreation goals and their leisure interests. Ex: games, crafts, spiritual programs
  • CI Programs (Cognitively Impaired/Creative Intervention) – programs specific to goals and objectives for individual participants who are diagnosed with dementia
  • 1 to 1 Intervention and Sensory Stimulations Programs – are targeted to specific individuals who are uninterested in or unable to tolerate a group experience

  • Please take note of the monthly calendar and the whiteboard for each area.
  • Encourage your loved one to attend programs of interest. Remember, attending programs is a matter of personal choice.
  • Remind your loved one of programs. Most residents need reminding and portering to programs.
  • Attend programs with your loved one to find out more about them and how your loved one responds while participating in the programs.
  • Volunteer to assist with programs or outings with your loved one!
